If you like green tea but looking to cut down on caffeine, Jiaogulan is an excellent alternative.

It’s made from a dried herb scientifically known as Gynostemma Pentaphyllum. The plant originates from a cucumber family, therefore it does not contain caffeine and will not disturb your sleep.

On the other hand, Jiaogulan contains gypenosides, which are structurally similar to the catechins found in green tea. These compounds contribute to its antioxidant properties.

Modern studies have demonstrated numerous health benefits of Gynostemma Pentaphyllum. Thanks to its main bioactive components, flavonoids and saponins, this herb:

  • helps to lower lipid levels (like cholesterol) in the blood and,
  • have anti-diabetic effect by balancing blood sugar levels and increasing insulin sensitivity,
  • fight cancer,
  • reduce the risk of heart-related problems,
  • support healthy liver function,
  • protected brain cells from damage,
  • boost immune system and limit inflammation,
  • increases endurance during training,
  • helps recover faster from physical and emotional stress.

In some regions of China this plant has been traditionally used for longevity, they call it "Xiancao" (仙草, xiān cǎo), which translates to "Immortality Herb."

Continuing to compare Gynostemma with green tea, we should mention some taste similarities. Jiaogulan tea taste can be described as of veggie-grassy spectrum, it combines a slight bitterness with a natural sweetness. Imagine sipping on green tea but with a hint of sweetness that reminds you of licorice or stevia.

Compared to a higher grade, this version is a bit more roasted, hence the aroma of bakery and nuts. After warming up, some candy tones appear. Overall the taste is balanced, with no smoking notes. A mild sparkling bitterness and powerful sweetness remain on the root of the tongue for a long time.

Both grades come from a USDA Organic-certified factory so you can enjoy the wellness advantages of our Jiaogulan tea without any worries.

How to Make Jiaogulan Tea

Heat the water up to 90-100ºC (~200ºF).

Put dried herb into the cup/pot in proportion of 1 heaped teaspoon (2-3g) of herb per 1 cup (200-250ml) of water.

Rinse the leaves once briefly.

Pour hot water into the pot and steep for 1-2 minutes.

Enjoy your tea.

You can steep the tea leaves 2-3 times, extending the time for each subsequent brew. Remember to use the leaves on the same day; they should not be reused overnight.

When brewing Jiaogulan tea, you will see a foam on the surface of the infusion. Don’t get rid of it. It’s those beneficial saponins you’ve extracted from the leaves that form these soapy bubbles when mixed with water. The more bubbles in your tea, the stronger the beneficial effect for your health.
