Centella asiatica widely known as Goty Kola grows in marshland tropical areas of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Madagaskar, South Africa and is also found in Eastern Europe. In some countries fresh leaves are used for cooking salads and curries, dried herb — for making herbal teas (frequently mixed with Ginseng or Gingko Biloba). But Centella is the most popular for its healing properties. Both roots and leaves are used for medicinal purpose.

This herb is one of the strongest remedy of rejuvenate therapy. It is traditionally used for treating nervous disorders, epilepsy, senility (decrepitude) and premature aging. Gotu Kola is good natural stimulator, the herb stimulates brain, improves memory, increases intelligence. Gotu Kola in traditional medicine

Gotu Kola has been used for centuries in traditional medicine in China and India.

In China this medicinal plant had been called the "fountain of youth" attributing to the herb the ability to prolong life. One of the legends of Chinese healing herbs describes a connoisseur of medicinal plants who had made the unique tea recipe with Fo-Tl-Tieng (Centella Asiatica) as one of the components, he had been drinking this tea regularly and so had been lived for 256 years!

In Chinese medicine, Gotu Kola is also used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, influenza , SARS and to cure liver diseases.

In traditional Indian health-science Ayurveda Centella asiatica is known as Brahmi which means "The Greatest of the Great". The herb is referred to as "stimulator of white and gray matter of the brain", which improves memory, increases receptivity and, at the same time, calming and relaxing.

In Sri Lanka and South Africa the leaves of Goty Kola plant has been used for a long time as the treatment of leprosy and other skin diseases, cancer, arthritis, hemorrhoids, tuberculosis. Local people also use this healing herb for lowering blood pressure and to cure mental disorders.

Gotu Kola active components

The main active ingredients of Gotu Kola (Centella Asiatica) are triterpene saponins (asiaticoside, madecassoside, madecassic and asiatic acids, brahmoside, centelloside and others, which content in the plant is from 1 to 4%). The plant also contains essential oils, flavonoids, sterols (beta-sitosterol, kamposterin, stigmasterol et al.).

How to make Gotu Kola tea (water extracrt)

You can just prepare a herbal tea with Gotu Kola and drink it for your pleasure every day and you'll get the salutary effect after a while. The tea made of dried leaves has familiar, a little bit brisk herbal taste.

But for significant health benefits you'd better make a water extract of Centella Asiatica. Heat up the water until about 90ºC and brew dried leaves in the thermos. Use 6-10 grams of dried leaves per 1 litre of water. Steep them al last 40 min. If you have not a thermos you can cook it in water bath for 15 min and let tea draw for 30 min more. Drink this herbal potion during a day. One cup each time instead of tea, for example. After a week you'll definitely feel the effect.

Contraindications and Side effects of Gotu Kola (Centella Asiatica)

Gotu Kola (Centella Asiatica) should not be taken by pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding women, people who are allergic to this plant, to asiaticoside, asiatic and madecassic acid, as well as patients with increased level of cholesterol, cancer or diabetes.

Possible side effects of Centella Asiatica include skin rash, nausea, headache, sedation, increased cholesterol or sugar, fatigue, decreased fertility, allergic reactions. With such symptoms reduce your dose or stop drinking the tea.
